Office of Student Affairs & Admissions
School of Allied Health Sciences
"Here
for the Health of Texas"
The School of Allied Health
Sciences exists to serve its students. Great pride is taken in our student body,
and the admissions committees strive to admit the most qualified applicants.
Each entering class represents diversity in educational, socioeconomic and
cultural backgrounds. While each student is
unique, all share high motivation, scholastic ability and great potential for
success as health care professionals. The staff of the Office of Student
Affairs (OSA) strives to provide students with the support necessary to
accomplish their academic and personal goals. Counseling and
support are provided to assist in the development of professional identity and
self-esteem and managing stress. Students will also find the OSA staff helpful
in the admission process, financial advisement, career planning and other
important aspects of their experience at UTMB. The OSA is involved in the total
academic experience of students, from orientation through commencement.

Student Life
All SAHS students
are encouraged to contribute to student life activities. The UTMB
Student Government
Association serves the needs of allied health, nursing, graduate and medical
students. At the SAHS, the Student Organization, the Multicultural Awareness
Council, the Student Early Enrollment Program and the Peer Support Program
address student interests and concerns.
Faculty
Admissions
The admission committee
of each department seeks students with diverse interests, social origins,
personalities, and other qualities to reinforce the special character of each
academic program. While academic achievement is an important factor, qualities
of intellectual curiosity, creativity, capacity for friendship, loyalty,
leadership, independence, responsibility and flexibility are considered. An
applicant must have a minimum scholastic grade point average as determined by
the professional program. Grades are not the only determinant of successful applicants.
Reading, writing and interview skills are also weighed heavily. An applicant must submit complete, official transcripts from all previous colleges attended.
Only official transcripts are accepted as proof of completed prerequisites.
Students are encouraged to work hard, become involved with volunteer or work
activities in health care, and be well-informed about the issues in the health
professions.

Applicants
Students who would like to receive information about a particular SAHS
program should write to the Admissions Chair of the appropriate department.
Those wishing to begin the application process should have completed at least
30 hours of prerequisites and can request application forms from the individual
department at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The task of judging
personal qualifications, motivation, scholarship ability and probability of
professional success of an applicant requires the completion of all parts of
the application. It is important to be thorough. As soon as the application is
complete, it is forwarded to the appropriate department for review and action.
Students will be notified of their application status but are encouraged to
contact the Office of Student Admissions (409) 772-1215 regarding the progress of their application. It is
the student's responsibility to ensure that all documents have been
received. Curriculum revisions are on-going at the UTMB SAHS and are
subject to change. Please stay in close contact with the academic
department to identify the latest pre-requisite requirements.
Applicants are strongly
encouraged to request to have their transcripts sent ELECTRONICALLY to UTMB
whenever possible. This greatly expedites processing and improves the accuracy
of transcript evaluation. The accepted standard for this process in Texas goes
by the name: SPEEDE.
Financial Resources
Financial aid is available to students at UTMB. The first step is to
complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is
submitted for the year the student is applying to the SAHS. The Office of
Student Financial Aid is responsible for administration of aid programs,
collection of loan repayments, and financial counseling of students in the
areas of budgeting and money management. Federal regulations require that any
federally funded assistance be contingent upon a careful analysis of the
student's financial need. The next step is to complete the UTMB student
financial aid form. The student will need to plan a budget for each year of
professional schooling. This budget should include tuition and fees, books and
supplies, housing, utilities, food, entertainment, personal expenses, and
transportation. The Office of Student Financial Aid will evaluate a student's
financial need and identify available resources. The types of financial aid
offered at UTMB are the Federal Direct Student Loan, Federal Supplemental
Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study Program, Pell Grant and State
Student Incentive Grant. Students who are ineligible for financial aid on the
basis of demonstrated need may be eligible for a federally insured Direct Loan.
A limited amount of work-study funds are available. To apply for
financial aid, students should return the financial aid questionnaire which is
included in your acceptance packet. Please refer to the office of
Student Financial Aid website for more information www2.utmb.edu/finaid/
